Mr. Hernandez who is well known as G. Herb Hernandez was born on January 14, 1948, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is Mexican American and Is one of twelve children of Guadalupe and Sylvestra Hernandez. His father was born In Malakoff, Texas and his mother was born in Brownsville, Texas.
His parents and paternal grandparents left Malakoff around 1938 because the Malakoff coal mines closed due to the growing oil demand. Since his father and grandfather were coal miners, they traveled north to work In Indiana, Ohio and Michigan but settled in Fort Wayne around 1940.
Mr. Hernandez graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1966 and ran cross country and track. He graduated from Indiana University., Bloomington. Indiana with a bachelor's degree in Education in 1973. During his time at Indiana University, he was president of his fraternity Phi Gamma Rho for one year. He received his Chartered Life Underwriter's degree in 1983 from the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and his Juris Doctor degree from Ohio Northern Claude W. Pettit College of Law in December of 1987.
From 1982 to the present. he served on over twenty boards. He was elected president on ten of those boards and was the first Hispanic/Latino president on most of those boards. A few of those boards were ARCH, Arts United, Associated Churches Foundation, Byron Health Systems, Catholic Charites of Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, Educational Opportunity Center, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne Sister Cities, Greater Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber., Indiana Commission of Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Junior Achievement. National Association of Life Underwriters, Northeast Indiana Association of Health Underwriters, PBS Channel 39, Parkview Foundation, Parkview Hospital, United Hispanic Americans, and United Way.
Mr. Hernandez has been active In the Allen County Republican Party from 1990 to the present. He served on the finance committee from 1990 to 1992. on the central committee from 1993 to 1994 and was Assistant county Chairman from 1994 to 1997. He was the first Hispanic/Latino to be elected for public office for Allen County councilman-at-large In November 2000 and his term ended in December 2004.
Mr. Hernandez retired from his practice July 2012 to serve as interim director for the United Hispanic-Americans until July 2013. Later he worked for the Fort Wayne Urban League from September 2015 until April 2017 as a Housing Counselor. From 2017 to the present He has remained active in the Greater Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber and the Indiana Commission of Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
He enjoys spending time with his daughter Emily and grandson Jaden who live in Fishers, Indiana. For leisure, he runs half-marathons, plays golf and enjoys reading. At age 65 and 70, he placed first in his age visions in Fort for Fitness half-marathons.
