IU Fort Wayne has announced the launch of a new Exploratory Program designed to assist undecided students in identifying their career paths and academic interests in healthcare. The program, which will be available on the Fall application, aims to provide a structured framework for students to explore various disciplines in health before committing to a major.
The Exploratory Program was created in response to the growing number of open healthcare positions in our community and nationwide. National studies indicate that 1.8 million healthcare job openings are projected each year and the industry is projected to grow 13% from 2021-2031.
"High school students often overlook the vastness of healthcare, believing it only includes doctors and nurses,” David Chappell, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management and Operations said. “In reality, healthcare offers a multitude of opportunities, from social work and medical imaging to public health, and oral care, all contributing to a healthier society."
The Exploratory Program is designed to be flexible and supportive, offering a variety of resources and opportunities for students. Key components of the program include:
- Personalized Advising: Each student will be paired with a dedicated academic advisor who specializes in helping students identify their strengths, interests, and career goals. Advisors will work one-on-one with students to develop personalized academic plans.
- Career Exploration Courses: Students will have the opportunity to enroll in courses specifically designed to introduce them to different health professions. These courses will include guest lectures from industry professionals, hands-on projects, and field trips.
- Workshops and Seminars: The program will host a series of workshops and seminars on topics such as resume building, networking, and career planning. These events are aimed at providing students with practical skills and knowledge to aid in their career decision-making process.
- Peer Mentoring: Upperclassmen who have successfully navigated the process of choosing a major will serve as peer mentors to Exploratory Program participants. This mentorship aims to provide insights and support from a student perspective.
Jake Huffman, Director of Student Success expressed his enthusiasm for the new program. "The Exploratory Program is a strategic initiative that highlights our commitment to student success. By providing our students with the tools and resources to explore their interests and passions, we are setting them up for long-term academic and professional success."
