Community Health Minor

Discover the Community Health Minor

Many groups of people face significant challenges to living healthy lives. These challenges are influenced not only by individual choices but also by where we live, work and play. Through the Minor in Community Health, students gain knowledge, skills and hands-on experience that prepare them to tackle these real-world problems. This minor can be completed 100% online.

Eligibility

  • Students must complete at least 9 credit hours of the minor through the IU Fort Wayne campus.
  • Students enrolled in baccalaureate programs at Indiana University who are in good academic standing may pursue the community health minor.
  • Public health students majoring in community health are not eligible for the community health minor.
  • Students who successfully complete the requirements for the community health minor with a grade of “C” or better in all courses credited to the minor will have the minor conferred with their baccalaureate degree.

Minor requirements

Required courses

Take four courses for 12 credits (with minimum grade of “C” or better required):

  • PBHL-P 109 Introduction to Public Health
  • PBHL-S 120 Introduction to Community Health
  • PBHL-S 337 Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health (offered spring only)
  • PBHL-S 415 Applied Health Promotion Methods (offered spring only) – Prerequisite: PBHL-S 120

Elective courses

Choose one course for 3 credits (with minimum grade of “C” or better required):

  • PBHL-S 315 Community Organizing for Health Promotion – Prerequisite: PBHL-S 120
  • PBHL-S 220 Navigating the Maze of Healthy Living
  • PBHL-S 349 Research Methods in Community Health – Prerequisite: PBHL-S 120
  • PBHL-S 422 Coaching for Health Behavior Change (not yet regularly offered)

Take the five courses below for a total of 15 credits.

  • PBHL-S 120 Introduction to Community Health
  • PBHL-S 315 Community Organizing for Health Promotion
  • PBHL-S 349 Research Methods in Community Health
  • PBHL-S 415 Applied Health Promotion Methods
  • PBHL-S 422 Coaching for Health Behavior Change

Minor in Community Health – CHES Pathway

Students will take these five 3-credit courses:

  • PBHL-S 120 Introduction to Community Health
  • PBHL-S 315 Community Organizing for Health Promotion
  • PBHL-S 330 Theoretical Foundations of Community Health
  • PBHL-S 360 Assessment and Planning for Community Health Promotion
  • PBHL-S 361 Implementation and Evaluation for Community Health

You must complete the required courses with a grade of “C” or better in all courses credited to the minor.

Minor in Community Health – Non-CHES Pathway

Students will take these four 3-credit courses:

  • PBHL-S 120 Introduction to Community Health
  • PBHL-S 220 Navigating the Maze to Healthy Living
  • PBHL-S 250 Social and Behavioral Dimensions of Public Health
  • PBHL-S 337 Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health

PLUS - Pick any one of the following 3-credit courses:

  • PBHL-S 105 Music, Movies, and Public Health
  • PBHL-S 222 This Stress is Killing Me: Stress and Its Effects on You
  • PBHL-S 240 Peer Health Education and Leadership
  • PBHL-S 325 Urban Angst Suburban Blues: Public Mental Health
  • PBHL-S 422 Coaching for Health Behavior Change
