Dental Technology

What is dental technology?

Dental technicians work behind the scenes to restore the patient's oral health by creating custom-made dental appliances and prostheses based on the specifications provided by the dentist.  Dental technicians work with advanced technology such as CAD/CAM and 3D-printing as well as a variety of materials. Graduates of the IU Fort Wayne Dental Technology program will be prepared to:

  • Fabricate Dentures and Partial Dentures
  • Fabricate Crowns and Bridges
  • Fabricate Orthodontic Appliances
  • Apply to Dental School
  • Work in a dental laboratory

The dental technology program at IU Fort Wayne offers a four-year baccalaureate degree. The program has maintained full accreditation by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation since its beginning in 1972.

Our program combines artistry, science, and oral health in a non-traditional university setting. It is a strategic starting-point for students pursuing dental school or students interested in dental laboratory management, dental sales, or owning their own dental laboratory.

How do you earn a degree in dental technology?

To earn an Indiana University Bachelor of Science in Dental Technology, you will complete 120 credit hours of course work. Most courses are 3 credit hours but some vary. You can choose between two concentration tracks: sales and leadership or pre-dentistry. Students completing the pre-dentistry track will complete all prerequisite courses for the IU School of Dentistry.
