Indiana University Fort Wayne Holds 32nd Annual Student Education and Research Reception

Indiana University Fort Wayne is celebrating its Student Education and Research Fellowship (SERF) program participants at its 32nd Annual Reception on Wednesday, July 31, from 5:00-8:30 pm. The reception, to be held at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation, is an opportunity for students to present their groundbreaking research in the health sciences spectrum and be honored for their many accomplishments.

“Indiana University Fort Wayne has been leading the way in clinical research for over 30 years,” said Dr. Fen-Lei Chang, Professor of Neurology and Associate Dean at IU Fort Wayne. “Our students work closely with IU Fort Wayne faculty and area providers from day one. The research presented takes what they’ve learned from these experiences and presents newer and effective ways the health sciences industry can serve patients.”

The SERF program is structured to provide graduate and medical students with research skills and practical experience in conducting research independently so they are better prepared for their work environments following graduation. Through the program, students gain valuable experience assessing the validity of current clinical practice standards, as well as determining the significance of their own findings.

This year, 18 medical students will provide poster presentations of their research. Seven of the 18 were selected to give oral presentations of their findings. Research was conducted in neurology, neurosurgery, pediatrics, cardiology, infectious disease, trauma and orthopedics to name a few. The students giving oral presentations conducted research on WATCHMAN device sizing in 3D models, spinal fusion techniques, malpractice in shoulder surgeries, and more.

We are fortunate enough to have two hospitals right here in Fort Wayne that are very much patient centered and focused on improving the standard of care,” said Connor Holcomb, Indiana University Fort Wayne School of Medicine and SERF student. “To be able to treat our own Fort Wayne community through the SERF program and IU Fort Wayne is really a privilege, and better prepares us for what’s to come.”
