Professional licensure and certification disclosure
The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) Dental Assisting Program on the Indiana University Fort Wayne campus follows the standards of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), the sole agency to accredit dental and dental-related education programs conducted at the post-secondary level, in preparing students for a certificate in Dental Assisting.
The program curriculum satisfies the educational requirements for graduates to apply for the Indiana State Department of Health Dental Radiographer License; and to apply for the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification.
Indiana University has not determined whether completion of IU Fort Wayne's CODA-accredited dental assisting program meets educational requirements to apply for a dental radiographer license, if required, in any state other than the State of Indiana.
Completion of IU Fort Wayne's CODA-accredited dental assisting program meets the educational requirements to apply for DANB exams and certifications which, per DANB, are recognized or required in 39 states, the District of Columbia, the US Air Force and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
Each state has designated/specific job titles for dental assistants and dictates requirements for each level of dental assistant (i.e. Dental Assistant versus Registered Dental Assistant), if applicable.
Additionally, each state has allowable and prohibited dental assisting functions and/or duties. IU Fort Wayne has not determined whether completion of IU Fort Wane's CODA-accredited dental assisting program meets educational requirements to perform allowable duties in any state other than the State of Indiana.
IU Fort Wayne recommends reviewing “State Requirements” on DANB’s website which is a comprehensive resource to review state requirements for dental assistants and for required DANB exams and/or certifications in a particular state.
